The Beginning of Branding Watermelonski

So, here we are at the beginning of our “brand”.  Watermelonski!
We design beautiful illustrations and then turn them into beautiful tunics.  Our idea is creative inspiration in fashion. Easy enough.

But, as I have discovered, having an idea and starting a business are like two totally different planets! Yes, they are definitely in the same galaxy and they are not so far apart but it’s a pretty big trip to get from the idea the business. I don’t know, maybe it’s more like one planet and a few satellites orbiting around but in any case it’s a tough galaxy to navigate.
We are starting off pretty new so I thought I’d let you in on the journey from the beginning to the big bang ending.

So, the idea, that was easy. The creative inspiration just spilled out all over the place.  We have our logo; it’s the cutest little watermelon EVER!

We have a great back story that you can read about here.  We even came up with a great plan for marketing.  Social media! Yup, original, I know.  Social. Media.

If you post it they will come.

Well it turns out there is a little more to it than that. I have had to resist the urge to fall hopelessly into the black hole of research. The possibilities are seemingly limitless and it can definitely make the journey to the world of business a little easier or at least more interesting.

I have read a ton and now that I have it all down, albeit in theory, I feel comfortable enough to write about it; Mistakes, missteps, triumphs and all.  They are, after all, learning moments in any case.  I’ll start where I started, Facebook.

Marketing on Facebook!

First of all let me say, it’s a definite must-do! Even if you don’t know what you’re doing, you just gotta do it.

So, here’s where we are on our brilliant plan of Facebook marketing:

We set our page up, if you haven’t “liked” us yet we hope you will soon. It’s easy click here. We invited all our friends to join, it was all so easy just sit back and watch the likes come rolling in.

20 likes.  20 likes?

Where were the rest of our likes? Well, as it turns out just build it doesn’t mean they’ll come. You see, my partner and I are not exactly posty (Bloggers are supposed to make up words, right?) on Facebook.  We shared and liked and even posted a few things occasionally but things have changed.  We now have lots to post about; new things and new thinks.

We are getting great feedback too.  We know that a lot of our FB friends already wear tunics on regular basis, and we dared to ask one special lady if she would like to receive a tunic from us, and tell us her honest opinion about it.  Her acceptance flattered us.  She is posty, she adores tunics, and we know she doesn’t hold back when it comes to an honest opinion.  Here’s what she posted on her FB wall:

"Design and material are perfect. It shows what it's supposed to show, and hides what it's supposed to hide. I'm not taking it off ever. And the best part, my tunic has a book on it!It is all connected."

So here is a shout-out to Alis for sharing her big heart and positivity with all of us.  She got our Facebook rolling with 120 likes in two weeks! This is the link to her blog Citaj knjigu ("Read books"). It is in Croatian; never the less, it’s great so check it out.

So, before I break it all down for you let me tell you where we are today number of likes 170 and counting!  Money spent, zero!  Getting our name out there a little more every day, priceless.  We took some hints from Neil Patel (Love him! I just might be his number one fan.)

Here’s the rundown according to Neil Patel (I just love saying his name):

1. It's all about content! Polish your About section, and profile and cover photo, too! > Done!

2. Invite your friends to like your FB page, and ask your friends to invite their friends. >Done! I shared Watermelonski FB page on my private wall with public option, so my followers can see it, too.

3. Share it on Twitter and/or Instagram > Ouch :) We are at the beginning there as well, so we’re postponing this step for later.

4. Dress your web with FB buttons > we are blogging, and there is FB button by default. Done!

5. FB ads > Must focus on this one, too!

6. Add FB button to your blog > Done! By default

We’ll keep you in the loop on how we’re doing.  So far we are loving Facebook!

Let us know how you’re branding.

Love,

Watermelonski Summer: Growing up on the Croatian Coast

Watermelonski was born in Croatia and that’s where some of our Watermelonski gals live and play today but growing up here and spending summers on the beautiful seaside; that was something special!  I remember how, when I was a little girl piling into our camper with the whole family (plus both grandmothers), I would be buzzing with excitement at the thought of dipping my toes into the clear cool sea, betting my sister that I would jump in first, and feeling as free as a little jungle birdie.

School’s out! Let the summer begin!
Mid June and the last day of school meant two more days (and that was two long days too many) and we head for the sea where the kids would spend the entire summer with the Grandmas.  That’s kind of the way we do it here in Croatia.  Grandparents often take care of the kids for the whole summer while the parents work. And let me be clear, when I say “take care of” I mean feed, slather, dunk, repeat.   This practice (and it is still going on today) is, I am absolutely sure, the reason Croatians hold summer vacation so near and dear.  Nothing messes with the Croatian vacation!

Time Machine back to 1985
Ah, the good ol’ days! I was 11, my sister was 10, my little brother was 4 and both grandmas were, well… grandma age.  I don’t know how long we drove I think it was about a hundred and fifty or so “are-we-there-yets” but I do remember rolling up on the campsite and all of us cramming our faces up in the window to see the beautiful sea and call dibs on the perfect spot for our tents.   My father set up the camper and the tents in just the right places.  Our outdoor kitchen and dining table were all arranged with everything necessary to enjoy our new summer “home” without missing a beat.
Of course, there were no mobile phones, tablets or wifi way back then but still, even without the discovery of the selfie, we kids managed to make friends easily and enjoy every drop of sun we could.

Every day was pretty much the same but somehow never boring.  Jump out of bed ready for the day.  Eat, probably palacinke (basically, crepes) with Nutella or jam, bread, salami, eggs and who knows probably a pickle too.  There was always too much food as that was the first step in the feed, slather, dunk, repeat ritual.  On to step two, grandma would slather us up with sun cream.  Oddly enough, I seem to recall both grandmas using pig’s grease as a tanning cream (they must have read that somewhere) and that they, and every single chair was always real shiny and real slippery.  Anyway, on to step three, run to the beach and dive in, followed of course just a few hours later with… repeat.

The night life for a kid on vacation is always memorable! We would gather at someone’s campsite, make our own palacinke (It was way more fun that way. More messy too!), tell jokes, and laugh out loud.  We would stay up til the lights went out.  Literally, until grandma would unplug the lights signaling it was party over until tomorrow.

Those are the kinds of memories that shape all of us; that teach us what’s important in life, and remind us what it’s all about:  family, friends, love, laughs and palacinke.  That’s what Watermelonski is built on and inspired by.

What are some of your best summer memories?

Yellow Rainbow

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”

― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You'll Go!

Sometimes you just need more sun and a more unique rainbow. That's why we designed Yellow Rainbow: To bring warmth, happiness, love, flowers, and even pheasants... into gray days! If you look closely, you will see the story...

When you tread through life with an open heart and a unique perspective amazing things happen; gray skies turn blue and a pale rainbow suddenly shines like yellow gold.
A closed door that looks like the end of the world suddenly turns into new opportunities. A challenge becomes the greatest gift of a bright new future. Oh, the places you’ll go!   We believe that positive thinking draws positive action with positive results.  Believe in yourself and others will too!

It is a great honor to be recognized as positive "thing". We receive so many comments telling us how inspiring it was to glance through our blog, Facebook, or our Etsy shop.  This is our positive and unique world and we are so happy that you have chosen to join us. Our door is always open.

We welcome you with our hearts.

First baby

This is our 'baby'.

Our first illustration!
It was exciting to create it and the moment we could touch the fabric when it came out of printing was amazing experience. The secret is in the set of colors that open you up, lift you, soften up and there is nothing else left but to glow in it. This is not a bogus list of words written to fill out this blog, here you go, check it for yourself ;)

So these two jungle birdies can boogie all night... however, they can also enjoy daylight in this bright magenta version!

Each tunic can stand on its own and be enjoyed completely. Or two connected souls can wear it and do some goofy things :) For example, have a cup of coffee on the roof, in company with sun and birds!

What do you do when goofing around? Let us know.

The Best Part of Watermelonski

Watermelonski is about fun and friendship.
What could be better than that?
Yes, for sure. That is the best part.

Sharing our vision of how beautiful life is through wonderful images of whimsy and imagination. It’s all about treasuring the moments that should last forever.
You know the ones; they bring a smile to your face and make you want to reach out and hug someone.
Our tunics are created in the spirit of sharing. We’ve created light, easy to wear tunics that tell a story. Individually each illustration is beautiful but when two friends (or sisters or mother and daughter, or partners) come together, the story is complete.

So, yeah, absolutely, the best part of Watermelonski is fun and friendship! Hmmm… but what about the process? That’s kind of the best part too.
Each tunic design is created from inspiration and illustrated electronically. Yes, the best part of Watermelonski is the sweet anticipation of an illustration just starting its journey. You can’t imagine (or maybe you can) the excitement we feel when our beautiful piece of art sets off to be magically (well, it seems like magic to us anyway) turned into our own original fabric.
Wait, wait, wait… The best part is definitely seeing the printed fabric; the divine smell of all the beautiful colors coming together. Or maybe touching it for the first time, knowing that it is about to be hand sewn into a wonderfully stylish tunic that will bring smiles to so many faces. Or, even better, the moment the finished tunic flashes before our eyes!  Yes, that’s it! The best part of Watermelonski is seeing every little line, dot and curve we imagined on a fabulous tunic that’s ready for you to wear and enjoy.
Oh man, one more thing!  How could we forget? The best part is obviously wearing a Watermelonski original. Our tunics are heart created and hand made with care. So soft, you can almost feel a hug coming through. It is beautiful, inspiring, comfy, fashionable and fun. Yes, the best part of Watermelonski is wearing it!
We are so proud of Watermelonski and hope that you have gleaned a bit of vicarious pleasure from our story and that you star in one of your own. I guess, in the end, there are so many bests it’s hard to name just one. It’s hard but not impossible…  The best part of Watermelonski is YOU.

What do you find the best part in the process of creation? Let us know.
Love,
Watermelonski Gals
